Hey kids. What a f*ckin week.
Despite the horrors, my rituals and routines kept me afloat (I wrote the teeniest tiny bit about it on Instagram Friday, perhaps you saw). Part of what drew me to the idea of Weekly Logs in the first place was the idea that each week would be different, but also the same. Asking the same questions week over week will undoubtedly lead to different answers, but the act of asking grounds it into ritual. Perhaps it doesn’t need to mean more than that, but I will continue to turn it over in my head.
What have you been listening to?
I’ve listened to Ethel Cain’s Sun Bleached Flies two (2) times and both times made me have to go take a lap.
Other than that, it’s been a lot of listening to people who are smarter than me about what’s going on, and what we can expect for the next 4 years (as best we can tell anyway). This guy has been my fav lately. Here he’s talking about things I already knew, but listening to him speak about anything makes me feel more equipped to speak myself, which I’m grateful for.
What has self-care looked like for you this week?
Mike’s Really Good Potato Soup
Saying Yes when my friends asked if I wanted to go to a show on a school night
Brushing my teeth three times a day
Reflecting on things that will always bring me joy
Not turning away from thinking about how much work we have in front of us
Putting the phone down for an hour before bed and after I wake up (more or less, I’m only human after all)
Putting the phone down to go outside multiple times a day
Talking
Not Talking
Making Lists
Going to the movies
Playing The Sims
What’s been inspiring you lately?
Any existential crises lately?
Ha! I’m keeping this question in this week because the whole thing has felt like an existential crisis. Never fun when a World Event forces you to confront how little you know, and how shaky your small vision of the future was.
What was the silliest/dumbest/funniest thing you did, or that happened to you this week?
On Election Day I tweeted—damn it, this just reminded me I’m probably going to have to delete twitter again, aren’t i—the following:
Then, two days later, when I thought I was in the clear, lo and behold,
Needless to say, I really needed the laugh after the way things shook out.
Sleeper hit of the week?
Ratboys!! A great band if you’ve never listened to them, and I specifically didn’t mention them above so I could make this whole question about them. They were playing at Midtown (formerly known as The Listening Room, [why they changed the name, I’ll never understand]) and my friends randomly invited me to go. It was 1. perfect, and just what the doctor ordered (their merch was also made to look like Life is Good, which brought an added layer of joy), and 2. it reminded me that I literally never know when good bands come to town? I wonder how many I’ve missed, but not thinking about it is going on my list of Self-Care. Anyway, it made it abundantly clear that I should pay more attention to my city’s happenings (and go out with my friends more).
I’ll leave it at that for you babies. As always, we’re here for you if you need anything.
Bye now,
Leyna
